Bio Nebraska and Pfizer showcase bioscience industry at 2011 Bio-Innovation Conference
(Omaha, NE; October 11, 2011) – Bio Nebraska Life Sciences Association and Pfizer presented the 2011 Bio-Innovation Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska, this past week. Nebraska’s fast-growing bioscience industry plays a crucial role in the state’s economy, said government and business leaders during the 2011 Bio-Innovation Conference hosted by Pfizer Global Supply and Bio Nebraska Life Sciences Association. “The Nebraska biotechnology industry has grown 19 to 20 percent each year over the past seven years,” said Gov. Dave Heineman, a speaker at the conference. “America needs to be able to compete internationally, and this is the key to our future.” Among the other speakers at the conference were J.B Milliken, President of the University of Nebraska; U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry; Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler; Dan Curran, Director of Business Development for the Nebraska Department of Economic Development; and Mike Morgan, Lincoln Site Leader for Pfizer Global Supply. Many of the speakers discussed the bio industry’s impact on the state and stressed the importance of its continued growth. “In order for the business community to flourish, we need to decrease uncertainty and increase entrepreneurship,” said Fortenberry. Following the conference, attendees toured the Pfizer facility, a prime example of a U.S.-based company with strong roots in Nebraska that has invested in both new equipment and in new employees to grow its animal health business. The tour showcased the production area where bacteria used in the manufacturing of animal vaccines are grown and processed. Guests also observed the fill area where, at the time, vials were being filled with a medicine for dogs. Pfizer recently hired 30 employees to help in this area of its facility. In its packaging area, Pfizer labels and packages the vials for distribution using robotics. It took approximately five minutes to run 500 vials for packaging. “It was wonderful to collaborate with Pfizer and host a conference for leaders in the bioscience industry, education and government,” said Jim McClurg, Chairman of the Bio Nebraska Life Sciences Association. “We appreciate everyone making time to discuss current issues, and I am pleased they recognize the importance of the bioscience industry to our state.”
